Recovery Timeline
After your vasectomy, it's recommended you go home and rest for the remainder of the day. Some men recover quite quickly while others may take up to 2 weeks. The average time of feeling back to normal is about 7 days. You may feel some discomfort in the testicles or abdomen.
Wound Care
You will have a small wound on the scrotum where we performed the operation. Try not to fiddle with the wound as it may re-open. See dressing management section below for more information.
Showering
You may take a daily shower when you get home. Keep the area clean and pat dry gently.
Pain Management
For the first few days we recommend taking Paracetamol (2 tablets, 4 times a day) and Nurofen (2 tablets, 3 times a day) for any discomfort.
Sexual Activity
Do not have sex for 1 week after your procedure as this may upset the surgical site. Gentle masturbation is OK.
Activity Restrictions
Please avoid the following activities:
- 1 WEEK: Jogging, Gym Workouts, Lifting that involves straining
- 3 WEEKS: Cycling, contact sports, martial arts
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS ADVICE INCREASES YOUR CHANCES OF A POSTOPERATIVE COMPLICATION SUCH AS SCROTAL HAEMATOMA OR INFECTION
Bruising is Normal
If there is more bleeding than usual during the operation, you may end up with black/blue discolouration around the scrotum or even tracking up onto the penis. Don't worry! This is normal and only a small amount of blood can have a dramatic effect. This will go away after a couple of weeks.
Semen Analysis
You must complete your Post Vasectomy Semen Analysis at 3 months and at least 20 ejaculations after your procedure to confirm your vasectomy has been successful. Assume you are fertile until we tell you otherwise.
Dressing Management
We will apply a waterproof dressing over your operation site. This may be removed after about 48 hours.
Sometimes we close this wound with 1 or 2 stitches - we will let you know before you leave if this was the case. The stitches are absorbable and will disappear in about 2-4 weeks so you don't need to get them taken out.
Tip: If your dressing falls off in the first 24 hours, simply place a bandaid over the wound for a couple of days.
